STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore Alex Williams earned the win on the mound as Stanford defeated Grand Canyon, 8-2, Sunday to win the series at Sunken Diamond.
Williams (2-1) allowed just three hits and one unearned run to go with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings for the Cardinal (3-8). Junior Carson Rudd came out of the bullpen in the top of the eighth and picked up the save. He had two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. Dawson McCarville (1-2) took the loss for the Lopes (6-5).
Freshman shortstop Adam Crampton was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman Brock Jones was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Cardinal. Junior Tim Tawa also had a pair of RBI going 1-for-2 at the plate.
Stanford quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With bases loaded, first baseman Brett Barrera brought home Owen Cobb as he grounded out to the shortstop. Jones then hit a two-run single to centerfield, scoring Carson Greene and Cole Hinkelman.
The Cardinal added to its lead in the bottom of the second as Crampton scored on a pair of wild pitches after reaching on a single to right field.
Stanford scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Crampton hit a single to centerfield, plating Brett Barrera from second. Jones followed on a throwing error by the GCU centerfielder.
Tawa capped off the scoring for the Cardinal in the bottom of the eighth, hitting a two-run single to centerfield to score Barrera and Jones.
Grand Canyon manufactured a run in the top of the second as catcher David Avitia had an RBI groundout to third, which scored second baseman Drew Smith. With bases loaded in the top of the eighth, Nate Gawelko drew a walk to score Dane Stankiewicz.
Stanford is back in action on Tuesday against Michigan. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Sunken Diamond.
