Sunday Setback

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Stanford offense just couldn't solve left-hander Callie Turner on Sunday afternoon, as the Tennessee starter tossed a complete-game shutout and limited the Cardinal to just four hits as Stanford (22-4) dropped a 5-0 decision to Tennessee (14-8).

With the win, Turner improved to 8-6 on the season. It marked just the second time this year that the Cardinal had been shut out, and snapped a nine-game win streak for Stanford.

Sophomore Emily Young had two of Stanford's four hits, finishing 2-for-3 while hitting out of the eighth spot in the order.

Tennessee catcher Ally Shipman had a career day for the Volunteers, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Cailin Hannon provided the bulk of the run support for Turner, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Freshman Alana Vawter was saddled with her first loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and two walks while striking out six. The loss dropped Vawter to 9-1 on the season.

Hannon got the scoring started for Tennessee with a two-out RBI-single through the left side in the first inning. She added to the lead in the third with another two-out single through the right side, plating Shipman on the play.

The Volunteers managed another two-out run in the fourth as Shipman connected for her second homer of the year out to left-center field.

Leading 3-0 headed to the seventh, Tennessee added two insurance runs to claim the 5-0 victory.

Stanford will now take a week off from competition due to finals, returning to open Pac-12 play at Oregon on March 21.
