STANFORD, Calif. – Five Stanford fencers were named All-Americans in a special selection by the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association.
Robin Cheong (men's epee) and Noah Matricciani (men's saber) were named to the second team. Hanna Lee (women's epee), Madeline Liao (women's foil), and Lucas Orts (men's foil) were honorable mention.
In addition, 12 Cardinal were named All-West Region. First-team selections were: Cheong, Lee, Liao, and Orts. Second-team choices were: Matricciani and Samuel Kwong (men's saber).
Honorable mention selections were: Julian Cheng (men's foil), Valerie Garcia (women's saber), Amanda Han (women's epee), Tristan Krueger (men's epee), Aidan Kung (men's epee), and Calvin Zau (men's saber).
Typically, the top 12 NCAA Championships placers in each weapon earn All-America honors – 1-4 are first team and 5-8 are second team, and 9-12 are honorable mention. Because the NCAA Championships were canceled in March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, 24 fencers in each weapon were named All-American based on season performance.
All five of Stanford's NCAA qualifiers were named All-Americans. This is the second All-America honor for Orts and the first for Cheong, Lee, Liao, and Matricciani.
This is the first year that the USFCA has made All-Region selections. Stanford had four West Region champions this season: Cheong, Lee, Liao, and Orts.
