Sailor Spotlight: Ashton Borcherding

As Stanford's student-athletes have departed campus for home, it's time to get to know the members of the sailing team. Today's edition features Ashton Borcherding:

How did you get your start with sailing?
I started sailing through a summer program at a local yacht club on the Long Island sound when I was about 8.

Why did you choose Stanford?
I chose Stanford for the combination of excellent athletics and academics. Also, it was one of the only places where we could sail year round. Coming from New England, this was a huge plus.

Favorite memory from the team?
Celebrating my birthday during preseason with a trip to Half Moon Bay with the whole team.

What do you enjoy doing when not on the water?
I enjoy running and hiking, hanging out with friends and catching up on school work.

What are you currently doing away from campus?
Enjoying time with family, focusing on my academics and extracurriculars, watching lots of movies.

How has your Stanford experience helped you manage the COVID-19 situation?
I think that being on an athletic team at Stanford teaches you how to be adaptable. We often missed classes for weekend travel and had to find ways to make up the content virtually. People would be studying on the plane or taking finals at a hotel. Because of this experience, I feel confident in my ability to keep learning in a different environment then a classroom.
