STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford came away with a split of its doubleheader against Kansas State on Saturday at Sunken Diamond, producing a 7-5 victory in the opener before falling 11-1 in the nightcap.
Continuing its 11-game homestand, Stanford (5-10) was playing its first doubleheader since sweeping a pair at Cal State Fullerton on March 2, 2019.
Kansas State won Friday's series opener 6-1. The four-game series will conclude Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m.
Game 1
Nick Brueser was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI, pacing Stanford's 7-5 victory.
Christian Molfetta was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Cardinal, which produced a pair of three-run innings and received a quality start from Quinn Mathews.
Trailing 1-0, Stanford pushed across three runs in the third. Brueser scored on an RBI single from Carson Greene, who then came around to score following an RBI double from Tim Tawa. Christian Molfetta the tripled to center, scoring Tawa.
After both teams pushed single runs across, the Cardinal erupted for another three-spot in the sixth thank to Brueser's two-run double and an RBI groundout from Austin Kretzschmar.
Mathews tossed seven innings, scattering seven hits and allowing four runs while striking out six. Brandon Dieter induced three straight groundouts to earn his first save.
Game 2
Kansas State rebounded with an 11-1 victory to close out the second game, ensuring a split of the four-game series.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings until Terrence Spurlin's two-run home put the Wildcats in front 2-0.
Stanford answered in the home half, with Molfetta scoring on an RBI groundout from Brett Barrera to make it 1-1.
After a scoreless fifth, the Wildcats surged ahead with nine runs over the next three innings.
Max Meier started and took the loss, covering the first five innings while allowing four hits, three runs and one walk while striking out four.
