STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford softball rode runs in the first inning and balanced play to complete a sweep of San Jose State. The Cardinal won both game of Saturday's doubleheader, 6-1 and 7-1, Saturday at Smith Family Stadium.
Stanford outscored San Jose State 22-4 on the weekend.
Emily Schultz batted in a combined six runs on the day, going 5-for-6 at the plate. The junior hit for extra bases three times and was a double shy of hitting for the cycle in the fist game of the day.
Stanford (3-0) used a two-run third inning to take control of the first game. Tied 1-1 with a Spartan runner on third, Mia Luna popped up to Kaitlyn Lim at third base to end the inning. The Cardinal pounced on the opportunity thanks to keen baserunning by Taylor Gindlesperger. The junior singled into right field, stole second and scored on a two-run homer from Schultz to take a 3-1 lead.
Triples from Schultz and Sydnee Huff in the fifth and sixth innings would continue to put the game out of reach for the Spartans (0-3). Schultz tripled up the right side in the fifth to bat in Emily Young, while Huff's triple to right-center was all Hannah Matteson need to cross home.

Maddy Dwyer struck out eight batters and gave up only one run in the first game of the day, while the Cardinal got plenty of run support for the senior. Dwyer went the full seven innings and faced only 28 batters – allowing only eight on base.
The Cardinal returned to action in the second game of the day, with freshman Regan Krause getting the start in the circle. Making her first career start, Krause took a three-hit shutout into the top of the seventh before the Spartans were able to score a run. She ended the outing with four strikeouts to only one walk.
Krause retired the order in three separate innings and allowed only four runners past second.
