Card Swept in Opener

TUCSON, Ariz. – With only eight available players on its roster, No. 7 Stanford dropped a 25-17, 25-16, 25-14 contest to Arizona, Friday, at the McKale Center.

Stanford (0-1) lost in Tucson for the first time since 2005 and was swept by the Wildcats (1-4) for the first time since 2000.

Having practiced indoors for just over a week, the Cardinal struggled with its serve receive. The Wildcats registered eight aces, keeping Stanford out of system all night long.

Sophomore Kendall Kipp led the team with 11 kills, three digs and a block. Redshirt freshman Caitie Baird had eight kills, seven digs and three blocks in her collegiate debut.

Sophomore setter Selina Xu recorded a career-high 20 assists to go with six digs and two aces. Freshman Elena Oglivie made her collegiate debut at libero, totaling five digs and three assists.

Also donning the Cardinal uniform for the first time were freshmen Annabelle Smith and Malia Tufuga. Smith posted two kills and two blocks as a starting middle blocker. Tufuga came off the bench as a serving sub and put down an ace in the first set.

As a team, Stanford was held to a .057 hitting percentage and had just 25 kills. Arizona hit .274 and finished with six blocks.

Stanford and Arizona will meet again on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT. The match will be streamed for free on pac-12.com.
