Junior Brody Malone won five events and the all-around last week to earn CGA and MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors on Tuesday. Fellow junior Ian Gunther took home CGA Specialist of the Week, while freshman Brandon Nguyen earned CGA Rookie of the Week.
Malone accumulated a career-high 86.500 in the all-around to guide Stanford to a 412.350-371.250 victory over Army on Saturday in a virtual meet. The native of Summerville, Ga. registered a career-best 15.100 on the parallel bars to become the first gymnast this year to post a 15-plus in the event.
Malone began his day with a 14.550 on floor to capture the event title before hitting for a 13.700 to win the pommel horse. Moving to rings, he posted a season-high 14.150 to capture top honors there as well. A 14.550 on vault finished second behind teammate Brandon Briones at 14.700. After the national-best score on parallel bars, Malone finished his day with a 14.450 on high bar, the second-best mark nationally this year, to manage another season high and finish with the second-best all-around score in the nation this year.
With Saturday's showing, Malone has won 12 of the 15 (80%) events he's entered after competing in the last four meets for the Cardinal.
Malone has now garnered seven MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors in his career, while the CGA selection is his fourth.
