HOUSTON, Texas – Stanford men's swimming and diving concluded the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships with three podium finishes, Wednesday at the University of Houston Natatorium.
The Cardinal concludes the conference championship in second place with 788 points – an improvement on the third-place finish in 2020, and the highest point total for Stanford since it won the team title in 2016 with 808 points.
Daniel Roy had the best finish of any Cardinal swimmer on Wednesday, taking second in the 200 breast. The sophomore shattered his school record from November, swimming 1:51.07 to improve on the A standard he already had in the event. Entering today, that time would rank third in the country.
Stanford added 27 points in the event thanks to a 4-8 finish from Jonathan Cook (1:54.65) and Ethan Dang (1:58.34), both NCAA provisional marks.
The Cardinal opened the day with third-, and fourth-place efforts from the senior duo of Grant Shoults and True Sweetser in the 1650 free. Shoults reached the podium with a third-place finish in 14:49.12, and he was followed by Sweetser in 14:53.08.
Johannes Calloni, Matthew Hirschberger and Andrew Matejka also scored in the event for Stanford.
In the 100 free, freshman Luke Maurer took third to reach the podium in his first appearance at the conference championship. His time of 42.61 moves him to ninth on the school record book in the event. Maurer was followed by Mason Gonzalez (42.99) and Jonathan Affeld (43.46) in fifth and eight, respectively.
Senior Alex Liang took fifth in the 200 fly in 1:42.87, while Preston Forst finished seventh in the event.
The Cardinal took fourth in the 400 free relay, with the quartet of Gonzalez, Affeld, Maurer and Forst swimming a provisional standard of 2:51.52.
Stanford will now await word on selections to the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, set for March 24-27, in Greensboro, N.C. The psych sheets for the national championships will be announced on March 10.
