TEMPE, Ariz. – Stanford battled 13th-ranked Arizona State to the late innings twice, but the Sun Devils were able to come up with the necessary runs to sweep Saturday's doubleheader. The Cardinal (23-10, 4-4 Pac-12) combined for 16 hits on the day but fell, 10-6 and 5-4, at Farrington Stadium.
The second game of the doubleheader does not count towards the Pac-12 standings.
In the first game, Stanford entered the bottom of the sixth tied 4-4, but Arizona State's (24-10, 5-6 Pac-12) potent offense scored six runs in the frame to take a 10-4 lead. A two RBI single from Aly Kaneshiro pulled the Cardinal within four in the top of the seventh, but it was not able to complete the comeback.
Stanford entered the seventh inning tied 4-4 in the night cap, but the top of the order was retired to put the potential of extra innings in the hands of the defense. Arizona State's leadoff hitter grounded out to the pitcher for the first out, but in the next at-bat Jazmine Hill homered to left field for the walk-off win.
Stanford hit four home runs on the day, including two from Aly Kaneshiro. She becomes the first Stanford freshman to hit two home runs in a game since Jenna Rich accomplished the feat twice in 2010. On the day, Kaneshiro was 4-for-7 with six RBI, going for extra bases three times. Her six RBI in the first game of the doubleheader is the most by any Stanford player since Kristina Inouye matched the accomplishment against Kansas in 2019 (Feb. 8, 2019).
Despite the losses, Stanford still has a chance to win the Pac-12 series on Sunday. The rubber match against the Sun Devils will start at noon PT, with the game being available through the ASU Live Stream.
