STANFORD, Calif. – A goal 58-seconds into extra time ended Stanford's upset bid of No. 4 UCLA, Sunday at Maloney Field at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
Samantha Williams gave the Cardinal (5-6-2, 4-4-1) its first lead since March 28, but the Bruins rallied with goals from close range in the 77th and 91st minutes for its first victory over Stanford since 2014.
The freshman picked up her fourth goal of the season – a team-leading mark – with a strike in the 55th minute. Williams went wide to the left side before firing a shot that deflected off a defender's leg into the goal for a 1-0, Stanford lead.
Stanford would play great defense over the next 23 minutes before UCLA (12-1-1, 9-1-1 Pac-12) equalized in the 77th minute. The Bruins went to the left post, and a cross to Reilyn Turner at the center of the box would be enough to tie the match at 1-1.
Both teams traded possession over the final 12 minutes, with the Cardinal getting two shots from Abby Greubel to maintain the pressure. The defense held the UCLA to zero shots on goal over the final 12 minutes to force the third trip to overtime for Stanford in its last five matches.
The Bruins scored the golden goal in the 91st minute thanks to a scrum that allowed Delanie Sheehan to get a shot from close range.
Stanford honored senior Kiki Pickett prior to the start of the match. Pickett played all 91 minutes and finished the day with a shot.
The Cardinal looks to close the regular season on a strong note, April 16, at California in a rematch of a nonconference loss to the Bears on March 20. Kickoff from Edwards Stadium will be at 4 p.m. PT, with the match airing on the Pac-12 Network.
