Stanford Drops Opener

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford softball dropped the opening game of the series against No. 9/8 Arizona, Thursday night at Smith Family Stadium. The Wildcats won 9-0 in five innings to hand the Cardinal (22-5, 3-1 Pac-12) its first Pac-12 loss.

Freshman Regan Krause and was able to get two outs in the first inning, but a grand slam from Malia Martinez gave Arizona (19-5, 4-2 Pac-12) the only lead it needed all night.

In the top of the third, Maddy Dwyer came on in relief after the Wildcats were able to load the bases with no outs. The senior was effective in allowing only three hits the remainder of the game, and she limited Arizona to only two runs after appearing with the bases load.

The Cardinal were no-hit on the night.

Stanford will return to action with a doubleheader against Arizona on Friday, with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m. PT. Only the first game of the doubleheader will count towards the Pac-12 standings. Both games will be available to watch on the Stanford Live Stream.
