STANFORD, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford was too much for the 16th-ranked San Jose State Spartans, as the Cardinal earned a 16-5 victory at home on Saturday afternoon. The win is Stanford's third straight, moving the Cardinal to 9-4 overall and 7-4 in the MPSF.
No. 2 Stanford 16 - No. 16 San Jose State 5
It didn't take long for the Cardinal to find the back of the net, as Jewel Roemer scored just 30 seconds into the game. Stanford's defense was just as strong early, helping vault the home team to a quick 3-0 lead.
A perfect pass from Roemer to Hannah Shabb pushed Stanford's lead to 5-1 and it was again Shabb before the halftime break, giving Stanford an 8-3 lead.
The Cardinal executed well in transition in the second half to extend its lead, playing strong defense to collect a total of 11 steals on the day, led by three from Chloe Harbilas. Stanford's defense was suffocating, never allowing the Spartans a clear look at the net.
The Cardinal scored the game's last four goals, while shutting out the Spartans in the final period.
Stanford will rematch with San Jose State Sunday afternoon for its regular season finale.
