Shimp Climbs On Day Two

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Stanford men's golf closed day two of the 2021 Pac-12 Championships on Tuesday with a 6-under 354 and currently sits in fifth-place after 54 holes at Mayacama Golf Club. The Cardinal is led by fifth-year senior Henry Shimp, who sits at 8-under and tied for fifth heading into the final 18 holes on Wednesday morning.

Stanford has struggled with consistency this week, leading the field with 85 birdies but sitting last in the field with just 155 pars. Stanford is 42-under on par 5s this week to lead the field, but its 3.27 scoring average on par 3s is last. 

Shimp led the way for the Cardinal with eight birdies on the day to fire a 4-under 68. He is four strokes back of the individual lead entering the final round. Freshman Michael Thorbjornsen also had eight birdies on Tuesday to finish with a 2-under 70 and move up the leaderboard, while fellow classmate Karl Vilips tallied five birdies and an eagle for his 2-under 70. 

Stanford had the fourth-best team round of the day on Tuesday, but was surpassed on the leaderboard by Oregon State who shot a 16-under 344 to move in front of the Cardinal. Arizona holds the team lead at 29-under with 18 holes to play. The Cardinal will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday and will be paired with Oregon State and Washington.
