SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. – Racing in radials for the first time this season, all three Stanford sailors posted top-10 results at the ICSA Singlehanded Championships.
Christina Sakellaris and Grace Austin took second and fourth, respectively, in the women's championship, while John Kirkpatrick finished ninth in the men's. The top-two result was the third in a row for Sakellaris, who won the singlehanded national championship in 2018.
Sakellaris won a regatta-best seven races, half of the 14 run during the event. She finished just three points shy of first place, but 39 points ahead of third. Austin, in her first ICSA Singlehanded Championships, took fourth with 10 top-five finishes. She closed with a top-five result in each of the final six races to move into fourth overall.
Kirkpatrick took ninth in a field of 41 sailors, improving on his career-best 11th-place result in fall of 2019. He sat in 20th place through four races, and climbed up the leaderboard with a strong finish on Sunday. He wound up in the top-10 in each of the final eight races, including three top-fives, to end in ninth place.
The ICSA Women's National Championship is set for May 19-20, while the Team Race title will be up for grabs June 2-3. The ICSA Coed Championship closes the year June 7-8.
