Four Earn All-Conference

STANFORD, Calif. -- Four Stanford fencers -- all freshmen -- were named to the All-Western Fencing Conference team.

Haley Koo, Donghwan Park, Irene Yeu, and Joy Yun each were honored, based on top-four finishes at the Western Invitational on March 6-7 at the Air Force Academy. Each had the best records in their weapons at the tournament and were the top placers, though there were no official individual conference champions named.

Koo went 15-1 in the women's foil at the Western Invitational to finish with the best record of any of the Stanford fencers. Park went 9-6 in the men's saber, Yeu was 15-2 in the women's epee, and Yun went 12-4 in the women's saber.

Each went on to earn All-America honors through their performances at the National Collegiate Championships at Penn State. Koo, Yeu, and Yun each were second-team All-Americans and Park was honorable mention.

Stanford had five fencers compete this season and all advanced to nationals. They, including Calvin Zau in men's saber, combined for a 124-66 overall record, for a .653 team winning percentage.

Also, Lisa Posthumus was among the finalists for the USFCA Women's Team Coach of the Year. Stanford placed 11th at nationals.
