LOS ANGELES – Stanford softball fell to UCLA, 8-0 in five innings, Sunday at Easton Stadium.
The second-ranked Bruins (38-3, 16-2) scored four runs in the bottom of the first to jump to an early lead.
Maddy Dwyer pitched effectively for the Cardinal (29-18, 8-10 Pac-12) in relief, coming on with a runner on second and only one out in the first inning. Dwyer struck out the next two UCLA batters to end the inning, and she retired the side in the second inning to set down the first five batters she faced.
Stanford put on a late rally with back-to-back singles from Emily Young and Eleni Spirakis in the top of the fourth. With two outs already in the inning, it was unable to score a run however.
The Cardinal will return to action this upcoming week, closing out Pac-12 play with Washington, May 13-15, at Smith Family Stadium.
