PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Stanford rowing put on a strong display at the Under-23 World Rowing Championship, combining for seven medals and two world championships. The women's team won six medals while the men's team added a silver.
"I am so impressed with how this group has been able to not only stay positive through a very challenging year but also found the capacity to excel on the world stage," said head coach Derek Byrnes. "It says a lot about their individual character and passion for the sport."
Junior Kelsey McGinley collected a championship in the women's eight and a runner-up finish in the women's four for the United States, rowing in the 5 seat and bow, respectively. The United States topped Netherlands, which featured incoming freshman Iris Klok in the 6 seat, by 3.8 seconds for the world championship.
Sophomore Lettie Cabot helped Great Britain top the Americans in the women's four for the gold medal, with Cabot sitting in the 3 seat. Great Britain crossed the line 1.9 seconds in front of the United States.
Incoming freshman Luise Bachmann tallied a silver medal for Germany in the quadruple sculls, rowing in the 2 seat, while sophomore Lucy Black finished 12th in the double sculls for Canada.
Sophomore Lindsey Rust, who started her Stanford career with the lightweight team but is joining the openweight program, continued the event with a bronze medal for the United States in the women's pair.
