Sailing Adds Hobbs, Dale as Assistant Coaches

STANFORD, Calif. – Chris Klevan, the head coach of the Stanford sailing program, has announced the addition of two assistant coaches: Greiner Hobbs and Augie Dale.

"I trust Greiner Hobbs, and I believe he will put our team first because he truly understands that's what takes to win," said Klevan. "Greiner had a storied college career but I think he still has something to prove. When he arrived at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, he was not the best and not many people thought he had the potential to be. Greiner knew that and he took it personally. I believe he's coming to Stanford to show us all what it takes to get there."

Hobbs joins the Cardinal as the 2018 and 2019 US Sailing Hinman Champion, while also winning the 2019 Wilson Trophy. A sailor at Hobart and Smith from 2015-18, Hobbs was a two-time All-American and a finalist in 2018 for College Sailor of the Year.

"Since college, Greiner has established himself as probably the best dinghy sailor on the Team Race circuit, winning two Hinman Championships and a Wilson Trophy, something only a handful have accomplished," continued Klevan. "Greiner will bring a much-needed edge to our team."

Dale is a 2019 graduate of College of Charleston, where he was a three-year member of the sailing team after spending his freshman campaign at Old Dominion. Highly successful in college, Dale won the 2019 Gill Coed Fleet Race National Championship as well as the 2018 Team Race National Championship. Like Hobbs, Dale was a two-time All-American in college.

"Augie Dale is a phenomenal sailor with an impressive resume. He makes it seem easy, sailing at such a high level," noted Klevan. "The Charleston team has been immensely successful over the past half-decade and Augie has been a big part of that, especially in 2019 at the Newport Nationals. To me, Augie always seemed to approach his sailing with a joy unique to college sailing. He has a lot of experience and success coaching at the junior level and I expect him to bring his technical skill and a gumption to Stanford that will help us achieve our lofty goals. Augie personified what I feel is best about college sailing and I very much look forward working with him."

An adversity-filled 2021 campaign ended in successful fashion for Stanford sailing, which swept the competition at the conference championships and finished in the top five for each of the three national championships, including a program-best second-place result at the ICSA Coed Championships in June. The Cardinal capped the season with four All-America selections
