TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 5 Stanford placed five in the top 11 to win the men's team race at the Florida State Open on Friday on this season's NCAA championship course at Apalachee Regional Park.
Returning All-Americans Charles Hicks and Cole Sprout, still freshmen in eligibility, took second and third to lead the Cardinal, which scored 32 points to dominate the race. No. 20 Furman was second with 61.
The No. 3 Stanford women were fifth, with 171 points.
Hicks, racing in his home state, covered the 8-kilometer (4.97-mile) course in 23:32.9, with Sprout in 23:39.0. Thomas Boyden was sixth, Evan Burke, the USF Invitational winner on Sept. 4, was 10th, and D.J. Principe 11th. Stanford's top four are freshmen in eligibility, and seven of its top 10.
Florida State's Adriaan Wildschutt led from start to finish, pulling away before the halfway point, with Hicks leading the pack the remainder of the race.
The men's field was large, with 266 runners and 26 teams. Stanford had 12 runners.
Lucy Jenks led the Stanford women, finishing 27th over the 6-kilometer (3.73-mile) course. Stanford used seven runners in a large field of 298, with 29 teams. No. 1 BYU won the women's team race, with 24 points.
Stanford next races at the Sacramento State Invitational on Oct. 1 in Rocklin, California.
