SAN DIEGO - No. 23 Stanford dropped a double-overtime heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon, 1-0 to No. 21 San Diego State.
The Cardinal is uncharacteristically in the midst of its longest scoreless streak since 2011. The loss is Stanford's first to the Aztecs since 2011.
"Unfortunately, we failed to get a result again," commented The Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer Jeremy Gunn. "Very disappointing weekend results-wise, despite lots of great soccer played. Many good performances, but obviously we're lacking the goals."
Similar to form, Stanford came out the stronger team, creating pressure through its attack and forcing the Aztecs into numerous uncomfortable position. The SDSU goalkeeper was forced into a number of tough saves, including off a rocket aimed toward the upper 90 from Ousseni Bouda.
"Wonderful first half, thought we played exceptionally well," added Gunn. "We were in charge of possession, we were in charge of territory. We had by far the better chances, forcing their keeper into some fantastic saves. We did everything but get the goal."
The Cardinal outshot San Diego State 17-11 and had eight corner kicks to three from the Aztecs. The home team capitalized on a runout in the 102nd minute following a cleared Cardinal set piece for the golden-goal winner.
"Second half, more of the same, and once we went into overtime, we both traded some chances early on before their counter attack and score. On a day when we thought we had done enough to win a game, let alone earn a draw, left feeling pretty hollow leaving the game in defeat."
All four members of Stanford's defense, Keegan Hughes, Keegan Tingey, Andrew Aprahamian and Noah Adnan, played all 102 minutes. Matt Frank finished with two saves.
Bouda led Stanford with four shots, while Hughes' two on goal were a team high.
Stanford will return home for five straight, first featuring an out-of-conference matchup with UC Irvine on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
