STANFORD, Calif. - No. 4 Stanford took down No. 1 California in a tightly contested overtime battle 12-11. The Cardinal advanced to the MPSF championship game on Sunday, seeking its fourth consecutive conference tournament title.
Stanford featured seven different scorers, but Tyler Abramson provided an offensive spark throughout, notching four goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime period.
No. 4 Stanford 12 - No. 1 California 11 (OT)
The Cardinal jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but the game remained close from start to finish. At halftime, the score was tied 4-4.
The early third quarter swung in favor of the Golden Bears, as they took a 7-5 advantage. But the Cardinal had answers each time California scored, with Beck Jurasius' goal with 53 seconds left in regulation knotting the match at 10-10.
In the first overtime period, Abramson grabbed his third goal to put the Cardinal up 11-10, but California found the equalizer with 22 seconds remaining, and the game went to the second overtime period tied at 11.
It was Abramson who found the winner in the second overtime period and the Stanford defense held strong to prevent California's attempt at a second equalizer. Nolan Krutonog added eight saves and three steals to help seal the game for the Cardinal, which owned a 40-34 advantage in shots.
