RENO, Nev. - Three Cardinal placed in the top 6, while Stanford was sixth as a team, Sunday, at the Reno Tournament of Champions, held at the Reno Events Center.
Junior Jackson DiSario was the highest finisher for the Cardinal, placing third at 133 pounds. Redshirt junior Real Woods was fourth at 141 pounds, while sophomore Nick Stemmet finished fifth at 197 pounds.
DiSario opened the tournament with four straight wins, advancing to the semifinals with a 5-2 decision over Nick Kunz of Montana-Northern. The McDonough, Georgia, native dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 21 Devan Turner of Oregon State in the semifinals and closed out the tournament with a 6-2 decision over Wyoming's Job Greenwood in the third-place bout. DiSario improves to 10-3 on the season.
Woods, who made his season debut, went 3-0 before having to medically forfeit the remainder of the tournament. He opened with a fall in 2:16 over Hartwell Taylor of St. Mary. After turning in a 7-5 decision against Clarion's Seth Koleno, he registered an 11-2 major decision over Shea Ruffridge of Grand View.
Stemmet was also 5-1 on the day, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 12-3 major decision over Utah Valley's Levi Kovacs and a 15-8 decision against Grand View's Owen Braungardt. The Yorkville, Illinois, native dropped an 11-4 decision to Oregon State's JJ Dixon in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Stemmet posted a fall in 1:54 over Eastern Oregon's Marco Retano. He then tallied a 3-1 decision over Cal Poly's Trent Tracy and a 7-3 decision against CSU Bakersfield's Josh Loomer in the fifth-place bout. Stemmet moves to 11-6 on the year.
Redshirt sophomore Jaden Abas (149 pounds), redshirt junior Tyler Eischens (174 pounds) and sophomore Peter Ming (285 pounds) all advanced to the quarterfinals. Abas had three bonus point wins to start the day before suffering an injury, which kept him out of the remainder of the tournament.
Eischens posted a fall and a decision to reach the quarterfinals, where he came up short in a 10-8 sudden victory decision to Cael Valencia, wrestling unattached for Arizona State. Ming recorded three consecutive wins to begin the day before falling to Providence's KC Buday, 4-2, in the quarterfinals.
