Cardinal Halts Cyclones

MINNEAPOLIS – Led by Caitie Baird and Kendall Kipp, No. 18 Stanford defeated Iowa State, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-17, Friday, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Maturi Pavilion.

Baird and Kipp combined for 42 of Stanford's 60 kills. The Cardinal (19-10) hit .336 and out blocked the Cyclones, 11.0 to 7.0. Stanford finished with 67 digs and registered seven aces.

Stanford, which is now 40-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, improves to 3-0 all-time versus Iowa State.
 


Freshman setter Kami Miner controlled the offense with 52 assists, while sophomore libero Elena Oglivie anchored the defense with a match-high 20 digs – her sixth 20-dig output of the season.

Baird finished with a match-high 22 kills on .396 hitting to go with seven digs, two blocks and two aces. Kipp turned in her third double-double of the season with 20 kills on a .417 attack percentage and 11 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Sami Francis recorded 10 kills, five digs and two blocks. Senior Holly Campbell added six kills and a match-best seven blocks, including three solo. Redshirt sophomore McKenna Vicini finished with four blocks.
 


Freshman defensive specialist Taylor Beaven collected 11 digs, while sophomore Alex Lougeay returned for the Cardinal after missing 10 matches and finished with four digs and two aces in two sets played.
 


Iowa State was led by Eleanor Holthaus's 15 kills and 12 digs. Middle blocker Candelaria Herrera added 12 kills on .391 hitting and five blocks for the Cyclones.

Stanford will face No. 12 seed Minnesota on Saturday at 5 p.m. PT on ESPN+.
