STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore Riley Loos made his season debut and won the all-around with a combined score of 80.900 to guide Stanford to a virtual Big Flip victory over California on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal managed a team score of 394.350 while California finished with a mark of 380.200.
In addition to the all-around title, Loos captured top honors on floor exercise (13.800) and a share of the title on rings (13.450). Following a 13.000 on pommel horse, the native of El Dorado Hills, Calif. posted a 14.100 on vault before taking second on parallel bars with a career-best 13.600. He finished his night with a 12.950 on high bar – good for one more runner-up finish.
Freshman Brandon Nguyen also competed in the all-around, totaling a career-best 78.850. Competing in just his second collegiate meet, Nguyen managed four event career-bests, including winning the high bar (13.250) and vault (14.800) titles. The native of Elk Grove, Calif. also managed new bests on floor (13.450) and parallel bars (13.100).
Stanford won individual crowns in each event, with Blake Sun finishing first on parallel bars (14.400) for the second time this year, J.R. Chou capturing the pommel horse title (13.500), and Matthew Szot posting a 13.450 to share the title with Loos on still rings.
For Chou, the pommel horse victory came in his first collegiate appearance on the apparatus.
Stanford will return to competition on Wednesday, February 17 when it clashes virtually with Navy at noon.
