Fab Five

STANFORD, Calif. – All five Stanford fencers advanced to the national collegiate championships. That was the news Thursday as the Cardinal learned who would advance. The answer was … everyone.

Freshman Haley Koo (women's foil), freshman Donghwan Park (men's sabre), freshman Irene Yeu (women's epee), freshman Joy Yun (women's sabre), and sophomore Calvin Zau (men's sabre) were selected to compete at the National Collegiate Championships on March 25-28 at Penn State.

Without regional tournaments this season, the fields were determined by committees. For Stanford and other schools in the West Region, the basis for qualification was the Western Invitational at Air Force on March 6-7.

The Cardinal women went a combined 41-7 in individual bouts and the men went 20-13.

Koo (15-1), Yeu (15-2), and Yun (11-4) each had the best record of anyone on any team in their weapon. For the men, Zau went 11-7 and Park 9-6.

Koo, Yeu, Yun, and Park each seemed a lock for nationals. Zau was considered by the committee as a wild card, and got the nod too. Each weapon in each gender has a 24-person field.
