STANFORD, Calif. – Fifth-year senior Jacie Lemos has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for her academic and athletic achievements on The Farm.
NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners receive a one-time grant of $10,000. In addition to maintaining at least a 3.2 grade-point average, they must perform with distinction in their sport and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative. Stanford's overall total of NCAA postgraduate scholarship recipients is now 183.
Lemos earned her undergraduate degree in human biology and is currently completing a master's in Community Health and Preventative Research. A four-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection and a member of the 2019 IWLCA Academic Honor Roll, she founded Athletes in Medicine at Stanford (AIMS) – a widely used tool for athletes in medicine to build a strong community and lean on each other for support, resources and networking.
"I am honored to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and to be able to represent Stanford athletics and the values I learned as a Stanford student-athlete beyond graduation," said Lemos. "I plan to use the scholarship to support my medical education.
"Athletic injuries inspired my initial fascination with medicine, and my experiences as a midfielder on the lacrosse team and a human biology major in the classroom prepared me for the rigor of a career in medicine. My graduate research is focused on optimizing the health of older patients, specifically preventing adverse health events such as falls, and I am in the process of applying to medical school."
In June, Lemos was one of two recipients of the Donald Kennedy Award, presented to the senior athlete who best exhibits the combination of excellent academics, strong athletic ability, and a commitment to community service, as a part of the Stanford Athletics Board Awards.
"I am committed to using my Stanford experience to improve the lives of others, and want to thank my family at Stanford and at home for the endless support of my athletic and academic aspirations," added Lemos.
A team captain, Lemos helped lead the Cardinal to the best win percentage in program history in 2021. Stanford took home the Pac-12 regular season and tournament titles in the same season since the league's inception in 2018. An All-Pac-12 second team selection, Lemos scored the game-winner at Arizona State (April 16) in double overtime to help the Cardinal remain undefeated during the regular season.
