STANFORD, Calif. – Michael O'Connell and Brandon Angel had 16 points each, and Stanford made 32 of 41 free throw attempts as the Cardinal defeated Arizona State, 79-76, on Saturday night at Maples Pavilion. Stanford improves to 11-6 this season with a 4-3 mark in the Pac-12.
The 16 points were a season-high for O'Connell, while Angel had a perfect 7-for-7 mark from the free throw line. Harrison Ingram had his fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while James Keefe had 10 points and five boards.
The Cardinal tallied its highest-scoring first half of the season, leading at the break 42-32. Stanford scored 12 of the final 16 points in the frame, including a pair of triples from Angel.
The second half continued Stanford's dominance at the free throw line, going 19-for-24 in the frame after making 13 of 17 shots in the first half. The Cardinal had its first game with at least 40 free throws since Feb. 2, 2018 against Washington. Keefe went 6-for-6 down the stretch at the line, while Angel was fouled on a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds to go and made all three shots to close out the victory.
Stanford returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 27 at USC. The game will be broadcast on FS1.
