Hicks to Race at Millrose

Live Results Opens in a new window

NEW YORK – Stanford's Charles Hicks will race in the most well-known indoor track and field meet on the planet – the Millrose Games – on Saturday at The Armory in Manhattan's Washington Heights.

Hicks competes in the Dr. Sander men's 3,000 meters at 12:29 p.m. PT, during NBC's live broadcast window of 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. PT.

Hicks, a cognitive science major and junior academically, is among four collegians in the field, along with Michigan State's Morgan Beadlescomb, Iowa State's Wesley Kiptoo, and Northern Arizona's Nico Young. Pros in the 15-runner field include 2020 Olympians Cole Hocker and Mason Ferlic, 2019 U.S. indoor champ Drew Hunter, and former Oregon runner Cooper Teare, runner-up to Hicks at the 2021 Pac-12 Cross Country Championships.

Hicks is a four-time All-American. He placed fourth at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships and won the European under-23 title in Ireland in December. On the track, he is the European under-20 record-holder in the 10,000 and was seventh in that event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last spring and 15th in the 5,000. This will be Hicks' first indoor race in two years.

Also competing in the meet are eight other Stanford-affiliated runners during the NBC broadcast window. Ella Donaghu '20, in her first year as a pro, races in the Wanamaker Mile at 1:05 p.m. and Cardinal past and future – Olivia Baker '18 and Stanford-signee Roisin Willis -- will race in the women's 800 at 1:14 p.m.

The high school invitational miles feature five future Cardinal -- Ava Parekh, Riley Stewart, and Juliette Whittaker in the girls' race (12:39 p.m. PT) and twins Callum and Gavin Sherry in the boys' (1:18 p.m.).

Hicks will be the first Stanford athlete to compete in the Millrose Games since 2019 when Grant Fisher won the men's 3,000 and set an American collegiate indoor record of 7:42.62.

Other Stanford appearances at Millrose in recent years were Baker, who was seventh in the 800 in 2017, Chris Derrick, who set a school record while placing fifth in the men's 5,000 in 2012, and Melissa Feinstein, in the women's pole vault in 1999.

In the collegiate sections, Janice Davis won the women's 60 in 2005, and Jeff Atkinson, Brian Conolly, Brian Pettingill, and Christian Skoog set a school men's 4x880-yard relay record of 7:32.4 at Madison Square Garden in 1986. The first Stanford appearance at Millrose is believed to the men's 4x880y team of Dennis Arriola, Doug Villaret, Robert Maiocco, and John Schaer in 1981.
