Depth Shines at No. 2 Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – Traveling without key members of the squad, Stanford's depth shined bright in Jon M. Huntsman Center Saturday as the Cardinal totaled a 196.000 at #2 Utah, falling to the Utes by 1.675 points.

The Cardinal's team score was its second-best of the young 2022 season and included season-best team scores on both vault (48.875) and floor (49.175).

Super senior Kyla Bryant was the lone member of the Stanford squad to compete in the all-around competition, scoring a 39.250 with a 9.90 on floor and 9.800+ scores on vault and bars.

In her season debut, super senior Taylor Lawson competed on bars, beam, and floor. Her 9.825 on floor was her best score of the day and ranks as the third-best floor performance seen by a Stanford student-athlete this season.

Senior Grace Waguespack marked a career-best beam score with her 9.775 performance while her bars effort of 9.875 led the Cardinal throughout the meet on the event.

Freshman Anapaula Gutierrez had another strong performance during just her third collegiate meet, scoring 9.85 on both vault and floor and a 9.750 on Bars.

Beginning on bars for the third consecutive meet, Waguespack's 9.875 in the leadoff spot gave the Cardinal great momentum throughout the rotation. Stanford has yet to score below a 49.000 on bars throughout the 2022 season.

The Cardinal then went to the vault, where season-best matching performances from Gutierrez, senior Madison Brunette, and sophomore Amanda Zeng led Stanford to its best effort on the apparatus this season.

Stanford continued its momentum with a season-best floor rotation, highlighted by Kyla Bryant's 9.900 effort to anchor the Cardinal squad.

The day finished on beam where senior Wesley Stephenson led the way with a season-best matching 9.85 score in her lone performance of the day.

After three weeks on the road, the Cardinal finally opens its 2022 home season in Maples Pavilion on Feb. 4, hosting the California Golden Bears on The Farm at 7 p.m.
