Grind it Out

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Stanford softball ended up on the positive side of a pitcher's duel to defeat San Diego State 1-0, Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium.

Alana Vawter struck out eight batters without allowing an extra-base hit to defeat San Diego State's Maggie Balint. Sixty-four of Vawter's 86 pitches were strikes as she spaced out six hits to zero walks. The Aztecs never got a runner past second and were 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.

Stanford was opportunistic in it's hitting, scoring once in the top of the third. Sydney Steele reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Down to its final out of the inning, Sydnee Huff hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop and used her speed to beat the throw to first. As the throw went across the diamond to first base, Steele ran for home for the game's decisive run.

All four of the Cardinal's hits came with two outs in the inning.

Stanford returns to action with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Cardinal will play Boise State at 11:30 a.m., and UIC at 4:30 p.m.
