STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford softball homered twice but could not find the tying run in the seventh inning in a 4-3 loss to BYU to open the Stanford Invitational, Thursday at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium.
Kaitlyn Lim and Aly Kaneshiro both sent shots out of the park as all three of Stanford's runs came off home runs. Lim sent the ball past right center to break a scoreless deadlock on a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.
BYU responded with four, two-out runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Kaneshiro pulled a run back with a home run into left field to make it a one-run ball game. Regan Krause retired the side in the top of the seventh to maintain the deficit, but
Stanford was unable to register a hit in the final frame.
Lim ended the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Krause pitched effectively in relief, allowing a lone base runner in 1.1 innings of work.
Stanford returns to action on Friday with games against UIC (2:30 p.m.) and Seattle (5 p.m.).
