LA QUINTA, Calif. - The second round of The Prestige at PGA West's Norman Course was suspended on Tuesday afternoon due to high winds, which persisted throughout the entire day. Stanford, which went off in the morning wave and completed its round, is in 19th at 41-over. Only three teams inside the Top 15 played in the morning when high winds began, but the tournament was not suspended until midway through the round.
All 12 schools that completed their round on Tuesday were at least 10-over for the day, with nine of the 12 schools shooting a worse score than Monday's round and five of the 12 with rounds at least 10 strokes worse than Monday. The Cardinal followed up Monday's 18-over 302 with a 23-over 307. Only one school broke 300 (+16) during Tuesday's morning round.
The windy conditions were apparent in the scoring average jump from day one to day two. The combined tournament scoring average on Monday was 75.40, while Tuesday's average jumped to 78.27, nearly three full strokes higher than the first round.
The Cardinal battled throughout the round, as its five golfers combined to go out in 3-over on Tuesday morning. As Stanford made the turn to the front side (its back nine) and the winds continued to pick up, so did the scores, as the five golfers combined to shoot 30-over on the front nine. Henry Shimp (three strokes), Nate Menon (two strokes) and Karl Vilips (two strokes) all improved their scores from day one, while sophomore Michael Thorbjornsen ended the day as the Stanford leader in a tie for 25th.
Teams that did not finish their second round will resume play at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and the third round will begin with a shotgun start at 11 a.m.
