STANFORD, Calif. – Several Stanford gymnasts will be in action this week, with nine current Cardinal heading to the 2022 Winter Cup in Frisco, Texas, and senior Brody Malone traveling to Cottbus, Germany for the 2022 Cottbus World Cup.
The Winter Cup will be held at the Ford Center at The Star from February 25-27, while the Cottbus World Cup will be contested from February 24-27.
The U.S. men will name a new Senior National Team following the competition, and Winter Cup performances will help determine international selection for several upcoming events, including multiple men's artistic World Cup stops and the 2022 DTB Pokol Mixed Cup and Team Challenge in Stuttgart, Germany. Winter Cup is also a qualifying event for the 2022 U.S. Gymnastics Championships, which serve as the annual national championships for artistic gymnastics in the United States.
The Cottbus World Cup is the first FIG Apparatus World Cup event of 2022 and will feature Olympic gold medalist Artem Dolgopyat (ISR) and World champions Stephen Nedoroscik (USA) and Ibrahim Colak (TUR). Also joining Malone, who took third on horizontal bar at 2021 World Championships in Japan, are 2021 World bronze medalists Illia Kovtun (UKR) and Andrey Medvedev (ISR).
Current Stanford gymnasts scheduled to participate at the Winter Cup include Curran Phillips, Blake Sun, Jeremy Bischoff, Nick Kuebler, Ian Lasic-Ellis, Ian Gunther, Riley Loos, Colt Walker and Khoi Young. Future Cardinal Asher Hong will also compete at the Winter Cup alongside Cardinal alumnus Robert Neff.
