STANFORD, Calif. - Junior left-handed pitcher Quinn Mathews has been tabbed National Pitcher of the Week by the College Baseball Foundation, it was announced on Tuesday morning.
Mathews made two appearances last week, including making the start against No. 2 Arkansas from the Karbach Round Rock Classic. The native of Aliso Viejo, Calif. posted a career-high 10 strikeouts vs. Arkansas in a 5-0 shutout on Sunday to clinch the tournament championship for the Cardinal. Mathews faced one over the minimum through four innings and had a string of five consecutive strikeouts from final out of first through first out of third.
Prior to the weekend start, Mathews tossed a scoreless inning of relief against Santa Clara on Tuesday - striking out the side in order.
