LAS VEGAS – Battling in a back-and-forth quarterfinal at the Pac-12 Tournament, Stanford men's basketball was topped by No. 2/2 Arizona, 84-80, on Thursday at T-Mobile Arena. The game featured 22 lead changes in Stanford's highest-scoring regulation contest of the year.
Spencer Jones scored a career-best 28 points with a team-leading eight rebounds, hitting 12 of 18 attempts from the floor and four 3-pointers. He moved into ninth place on Stanford's all-time list for made 3-pointers (189), passing Chris Hernandez '06. Harrison Ingram pitched in 16 points with six rebounds and four assists, while Michael O'Connell scored 11 with four assists.
Stanford shot 54.2 percent from the floor and 55 percent from 3-point range, going 11-for-20 from beyond the arc.
Arizona led early by seven, 17-10, but Stanford quickly responded to take the lead five minutes late, 26-25, after back-to-back jumpers from Jones. James Keefe scored twice and Isa Silva hit two free throws to give Stanford a four-point lead, 34-30, but Arizona closed the half on a run to take a 40-37 lead into halftime.
No team led by more than five points in the second half, as there were 16 lead changes over the final 20 minutes. Stanford led 75-74 with 3:25 to go, but came up a possession short at the end as Arizona escaped with the victory.
