STANFORD, Calif. – For the first time since 2016, Stanford knocked off a No. 1 team, defeating UCLA, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-12, Friday, at Maples Pavilion.
Prior to Friday, the last time Stanford defeated a top-ranked opponent was at BYU on Jan. 15, 2016. It was just the third loss of the season for UCLA (12-3, 4-1 MPSF).
Stanford (9-7, 1-2 MPSF), which hit .348 as a team, remains undefeated at home this season. The Cardinal registered eight aces, including a career-high tying four by junior Will Rottman.
An outside hitter from Santa Barbara, Rottman led all players with 18 kills on .412 hitting. Opposite Luke Turner turned in his second consecutive double-double with 12 kills on a .435 attack percentage and 11 digs.

Junior setter Nathan Lietzke controlled the offense with 41 assists, and added eight digs, three blocks. He also had four kills on seven errorless swings to hit .571. Redshirt junior libero Justin Lui finished with six digs and two assists.

Junior outside hitter Kevin Lamp totaled 12 kills, four digs and two blocks, while tying his career-high with three aces. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Ethan Hill, a transfer from UCLA, added six kills on .364 hitting and two blocks. Junior middle blocker Nathaniel Gates chipped in with four blocks.
Sophomore Chris Kelly came off the bench in four of the sets as a serving sub, registering an ace, a dig and an assist. Sophomore Aidan Peters appeared in all five sets, playing back row for Lamp.
UCLA was led by middle Guy Genis's 14 kills on .455 hitting and a match-high five blocks. Ethan Champlin added 11 kills, seven digs and four blocks, while Kevin Kobrine had 10 kills and nine digs for the Bruins.
Stanford and UCLA meet again on Saturday at Maples Pavilion. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Los Angeles.
