SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Lucas Orts and Haley Koo became Stanford's first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation fencing champions, capturing the foil titles on Sunday at University of Incarnate Word's McDermott Center.
A day after winning the NCAA West Regional against the same three other schools – Air Force, Incarnate Word, and UC San Diego – Orts and Koo added to their title collections. This is the first year the MPSF has sponsored fencing.
Each of the weapons featured only four competitors. Each match was decided by the first to 15 touches.
Koo had the most dramatic run to the MPSF championship, edging UCSD's Rafaella Gomes, 15-14, in the women's foil final. Koo is 47-12 overall (.797 winning percentage).
Orts best Nestor Levin of Air Force in the men's foil final, 15-2. Orts is 46-14 this season (.767).
The next big date for Stanford is Tuesday, when the NCAA Championships field will be announced. Nationals will be March 24-27 at Notre Dame.
