Cardinal Falls Short

CORVALLIS, Ore. – No. 25 Stanford softball (20-7, 0-1 Pac-12) held Oregon State to six base runners on the night but couldn't find the timely hit in a 1-0 loss, Friday night at Kelly Field.

Alana Vawter had another strong outing in the circle, holding the Beavers (24-7, 1-3 Pac-12) to only five hits on the night, while the defense backed her up with an error-free performance to limit the oppositions' chances. Oregon State's lone run of the night came on a sacrifice fly in the first inning.

The Beavers threatened to add to their lead in the fifth inning with the first two batters of the order reaching base safely. Back-to-back groundouts to Emily Young at shortstop put two outs on the board but gave Oregon State two runners in scoring position.
Vawter maintained her composure to get the last batter looking to escape the inning unscathed.

The junior ended the night with seven strikeouts to five hits and a walk in another complete game – her 10th of the season.

Stanford's best opportunity to score came in the third inning. Ellee Eck singled to center field, and she used her speed to get advance to third on a right field single from Sydnee Huff. However, with two outs the Cardinal didn't have the breathing room to punch the tying run across.

The Cardinal looks to rebound in the second game of the series. First pitch from Kelly Field will come at 5 p.m. PT, with the game being televised on Pac-12 Oregon.
