TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 8 Stanford finished with a split decision on day one of the Pac-12 South Beach Invitational, beating Oregon 5-0 but falling to No. 1 UCLA 4-1.
The Cardinal opened its morning with a matchup against the Oregon Ducks, as Stanford shut out its conference foe to mark its third consecutive sweep win. Freshmen Emma Morris and Taylor Wilson clinched the win with a three-set victory as the Cardinal's threes pair, topping the Ducks 21-12, 16-21, 15-13. Fellow freshmen Serena Turner and Camdyn Doucet made their 2022 debut on court four, beating Oregon's Ashley Schroeder/Ella Tyus in straight sets, 21-19, 21-17. Sophomore Ellie Gamberdella and junior Kylee Matheson followed suit on court five, beating the Ducks' five pair 21-17, 21-16.
The afternoon saw Stanford meet No. 1 UCLA for the second time this season. Even with a straight-set win on court two and pushing courts three, four, and five to three-set matches, the Cardinal saw the same result as its season opener, falling 4-1 to the Bruins. Senior Charlie Ekstrom and junior Maddi Kriz notched Stanford's lone point of the match, going into extras in both sets and earning the win with a 24-22, 26-24 decision over UCLA's Rileigh Powers/Lea Monkhouse. The Cardinal opened the match with first-set wins on courts two through five, showing off its season's progress as the last time the two teams met, UCLA won courts one and three through five in straight sets.
The Cardinal continues on tomorrow in day two of the Pac-12 South Beach Invitational, meeting Utah at 9:15 a.m. and Arizona State at 2:15 pm. Both duals will be broadcasted live on Pac-12 Mountain.
