Card Sweeps Cougs

STANFORD, Calif. – For the first time in a decade, No. 12 Stanford swept BYU, defeating the Cougars 29-27, 25-20, 25-22, Friday, at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford (11-11, 3-6 MPSF), which improved to 10-2 at home this season, earned its first win over BYU (8-13, 3-6 MPSF) since 2019, and its first sweep over the Cougars since Feb. 4, 2012.

Junior Will Rottman led all players with 18 kills on 25 swings with just one error for a career-high .680 attack percentage. The outside hitter added three aces, four digs and two blocks.

As a team, Stanford was firing on all cylinders, hitting .420 while holding BYU to a .299 clip. Stanford registered 9.5 blocks to 4.5 by the Cougars and held a 28-21 advantage in digs. Both teams registered four aces.
 


Setter Nathan Lietzke dished out 36 assists and had five digs, a kill and three blocks, including one solo. Libero Justin Lui finished with five digs and two assists.

Outside hitter Kevin Lamp hit .304, tallying 11 kills to go with three digs and a block. Middle blocker Nathaniel Gates added eight kills on nine errorless swings to hit .889. The junior also recorded a match-high five blocks.
 


Opposite Luke Turner had a match-high nine digs to go with five kills, four blocks and two assists. Middle blocker Ethan Hill chipped in with four kills and three blocks, while junior Adam Chang came off the beck and put down an ace.

BYU was led by outside hitter Davide Gardini's 16 kills on .367 hitting. Opposite Kupono Browne, who played his freshman season at Stanford in 2021, posted 14 kills on a .480 attack percentage and had a team-high six digs.

Stanford and BYU meet again on Saturday in the final home match of the season for the Cardinal. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. on Pac-12 Bay Area.
