Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Release Opens in a new window

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford senior right-hander Alex Williams has been named 2022 Pac-12 Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced on Wednesday during Stanford's game at the 2022 Pac-12 Baseball Tournament.

The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.

Williams is the fourth Stanford baseball player to garner the award, including the second consecutive after Zach Grech earned the honor a year ago. Andrew Triggs (2012) and Mark Appel (2013) had previously won the award.

The native of Castro Valley, Calif. was named the 2022 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Pac-12 first team. Williams is 8-1 with a Pac-12-best 1.67 ERA over 14 starts this season. The Cardinal ace has logged 86 1/3 innings, striking out 80 compared to 19 walks. The native of Castro Valley, Calif. went 5-0 in Pac-12 play, sporting a 1.36 ERA over 10 starts and 66 1/3 innings. Particularly impressive over his last eight turns, the right-hander is 6-0 with a 0.45 ERA over that string.

A finalist for the Senior Class Award, Williams has been named CoSIDA Academic All-District and carries a 3.43 GPA as a management science & engineering major. In his first two seasons at Stanford, Williams volunteered with the Miracle League and participated in visits to children's hospitals. He has also worked at baseball camps, where he helps develop the youth in the area. While at home, Williams has volunteered at his local church leading a youth bible study for children ages 4-12.

To be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletics accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in voting for the award.

A Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be named in each of the Pac-12's 24 sponsored sports: baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, beach volleyball, men's cross country, women's cross country, football, men's golf, women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, men's rowing, women's rowing, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's track & field, women's track & field, women's volleyball, and wrestling. The award was first established during the 2007-08 academic year.
