Tip of the Hat to Lumi

STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Lumi Kostmayer managed a hat trick to run her season goals tally to a team-best seven as No. 9 Stanford (7-1-0) defeated San Diego (2-4-2) 5-0 on Thursday afternoon from Cagan Stadium.

The hat trick is the first for the Cardinal since Maya Doms had three against CSUN on August 26, 2021. Thursday also marked the second multi-goal of the season for the native of Southbury, Conn. after scoring two at San Francisco on August 25.

Kostmayer got the scoring started in the 16th minute as she put away a goal on the third consecutive chance from Stanford. San Diego's Sophie Kevorkian made solid stops on initial shots from Jasmine Aikey and Allie Montoya, but Kostmayer found herself in perfect position to put away the final rebound.

Kevorkian would ultimately face 29 Stanford shots, including 15 on goal, while making 10 saves.

While Kostmayer's first goal was the lone tally in the first half, Stanford exploded for four goals in the second stanza – including the second of the day from Kostmayer in the 52nd minute. It was a similar story for the Cardinal striker, who converted a rebound that came from an Abby Greubel chance.

Julia Leontini made it 3-0 in the 57th minute as she hit a well-driven low shot from distance that beat Kevorkian. The goal, mentioned postgame as a nominee for goal of the year so far, was Leontini's third of the campaign.

Kostmayer completed the hat trick in the 63rd minute as she unleashed a right-footed shot just outside of the box and curled it past the keeper and into the back of the net.

Including the three from Kostmayer, four of the five goals on Thursday came from freshmen players as Logan Smith scored her first career goal in the 72nd minute. Junior Amy Sayer played a perfect ball through the backline of San Diego where Smith connected in stride and slipped her shot past Kevorkian to run the tally to 5-0.

Junior goalkeeper Ryan Campbell made two saves for the Cardinal to record her third shutout of the season. The Cardinal defense limited the Toreros to just five total shots.

Stanford will now prepare to visit Santa Clara for a 7:30 p.m. match on Sunday.
