Season Opening Sweep

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Cardinal began its 2022-23 campaign with a sweep of the PCCSC Singlehanded Championships over the weekend. Hallie Schiffman took home first place for the women's division followed by Grace Austin in second place while freshmen Chapman Petersen and Jack Baldwin finished first and second in the men's division, respectively.

"Winning those two championships is a great start to our season," said head sailing coach Chris Klevan. "The team is already coming together, they're enjoying the work and, I expect, will celebrate these victories."

It was a decisive victory for Schiffman in the women's division as the senior sailor took first place in each of the nine races. Her teammate Grace Austin was just behind in second place, following in Schiffman's footsteps, earning second place in each race.

In the men's division, Chapman Petersen claimed first place in all but the final race when fellow Cardinal Jack Baldwin took the race win. Petersen finished with 10 points in the event to take home gold.

Baldwin sailed well throughout the weekend too, finishing second or higher in all but one race where he took third. The freshman finished with 18 points to take second overall.

"Our four Stanford sailors had a dominant performance this weekend at the PCCSC singlehanded qualifier with only one race out of the top two," said assistant coach Augie Dale. "It was great for the sailors to clinch both open and women's berths for nationals."

After the commanding performance this weekend by Stanford, the four individuals will shift their focus to the national competition taking place in early November in Norfolk, Virginia, hosted by Old Dominion University.

The Cardinal sailing team returns to action in the Women's ACC Round 1 hosted by Harvard next weekend.
