Cardinal Blanks Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz.Lumi Kostmayer and Maya Doms scored second-half goals, and Ryan Campbell and Stanford went on the road to pitch a 2-0 shutout over Arizona, on Thursday night from Mulcahy Soccer Stadium.

With the victory, Stanford improved to 8-2-1 on the year, including 1-1-0 in Pac-12 play. The loss dropped Arizona to 3-4-2 and 0-2-0 in conference play.

Playing scoreless in the first half, Stanford managed nine shots in the opening stanza, including putting three on goal. Both teams had chances, with the Cardinal holding a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks while holding Arizona to four shots (one on goal).

The Cardinal's best opportunity in the first half came in the 44th minute when Julia Leontini was taken down just outside the left side of the box. Leontini stepped over the free kick and delivered a curling shot that ricochet off the cross bar and away from danger.

Kostmayer, who entered the match with a team-best eight goals, put up four shots in the first half, but had three saved by Arizona goalkeeper Hope Hisey. She would finish the night with seven total shots – including five on frame.

Coming out as the aggressor in the second half, Kostmayer and the Cardinal finally broke through in the 51st minute as Samantha Williams made a beautiful run and sent a pass into the box that was deflected back out, but landed at the foot of the freshman sensation. The Southbury, Conn. native took one touch to settle before lacing a right-footed shot into the upper 90 to hand Stanford the 1-0 advantage.

The Cardinal, which managed 16 of its 25 shots in the second half, continued to press on and extended the lead to 2-0 in the 63rd minute when Allie Montoya made a run up the left side and sent a cross into the box where it found the head of a cutting Doms for her third goal of the year.

For Montoya, the assist was her third of the season as she now sits at seven points on the year.

Stanford finished the match with a 25-7 advantage in shots, putting 10 of the shots on goal and forcing Hisey into eight saves.

Campbell, who recorded her fourth shutout of the season, made the save on each of the two shots on goal from Arizona. Overall, the shutout victory was the fifth of the year for Stanford.

The Cardinal will now prepare to visit Arizona State for a Pac-12 match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
