TEMPE, Ariz. – Stanford allowed just one shot on goal while Allie Montoya and Catherine Paulson scored a goal each as the Cardinal (9-2-1, 2-1-0 Pac-12) blanked previously undefeated Arizona State (6-1-2, 2-1-0 Pac-12) 2-0 to record its second consecutive shutout.
The clean sheet was the sixth of the season for the Cardinal, including the fifth from junior goalkeeper Ryan Campbell. Campbell faced just seven shots, with her lone save coming on a shot from distance as the clock was expiring on the match.
Stanford seemingly took the lead in the 55th minute when Samantha Williams beat ASU goalkeeper Pauline Nelles to a free ball just wide of the post and dribbled toward the goal where she fell and ultimately kicked the ball into the back of the net. Just as the Cardinal began to celebrate, it was ruled that Williams pinned the ball between her arm and side and she was whistled for a hand ball that negated the goal.
Montoya and the Cardinal officially took the lead just two minutes later when Montoya picked the pocket of a defender, dribbled past the opponent, and slotted her shot past Nelles to the lower right corner of the net for her third goal of the year.
Paulson doubled the Cardinal lead to 2-0 in the 79th minute as she found the net for the second time on the year. The play began with Abby Greubel intercepting a pass and pushing it forward to Maya Doms. Doms took one touch to deliver a pass through the back line and onto the foot of Paulson who tapped the ball onto her right foot and powered it past Nelles.
Stanford, which was whistled for five offsides penalties, finished the match with a 19-7 advantage in shots, including 8-1 in shots on goal. Nelles was credited with six saves.
Stanford will return home to The Farm next week, hosting Washington and Washington State.
