First of Many Shots Earns Victory

EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman Lumi Kostmayer's goal in the sixth minute, coming on the first of 32 shots for the Cardinal in the match, proved to be the difference as No. 7 Stanford (13-2-1, 6-1-0 Pac-12) shut out Oregon (4-6-5, 2-4-1 Pac-12) 1-0 on Thursday night from Papé Field in Eugene, Ore.

Junior Samantha Williams played the ball into Kostmayer, who had her back to goal upon receipt. The freshman chipped the ball up, spun and fired her right-footed shot past the dive of Leah Freeman in goal for Oregon.

The goal was Kostmayer's team-best 10th of the season.

The Cardinal peppered Freeman and the Oregon goal throughout the first half, putting up 12 shots in the opening stanza to force Freeman into three saves.

The Cardinal offensive onslaught continued in the second half, with Stanford registering 20 more shots to finish the match with the 32 – including nine on frame as Freeman finished with eight saves. Thursday marked the third time this year that Stanford has eclipsed the 30-shot plateau.

Perhaps Stanford's best chance in the second half came in the 80th minute when Samantha Williams dribbled into the box from the right side of the field and was denied on an outstanding save from Freeman – her eighth and final stop of the night.

Junior Ryan Campbell was tested just twice in the match, registering a pair of saves as Stanford's defense held Oregon to just three total shots and two corner kicks to record the shutout. The clean sheet was the eighth of the year for Stanford, including the seventh from Campbell.

With the win, Stanford improved to 24-1-2 all-time against Oregon, and managed its 20th shutout over the Ducks.

The Cardinal will conclude the road trip on Sunday when it visits Oregon State for a noon kickoff.
