SANTA CLARA, Calif. - No. 3 Stanford suffered a rare non-MPSF loss on Sunday morning, dropping an 11-10 decision to No. 9 Princeton, before rebounding with a 19-6 victory over Bucknell at the Julian Fraser Memorial hosted by Santa Clara.
The Cardinal now sits at 19-2 on the season.
No. 3 Stanford 10 - No. 9 Princeton 11
The Cardinal never quite found its footing against the Tigers, having to fight back from deficits all morning long.
Early exclusions hindered Stanford, while Princeton proved to be deadly on the powerplay. Down 3-1, 4-2 and 5-3, Stanford crawled back to even the game at 5-5 but the Tigers scored two straight, making it 7-5 early in the third.
After an 8-6 deficit, Stanford again evened things at 8-8 with two straight goals from Jackson Painter, but it was Princeton responding with two of their own, making the score 10-8.
With time winding down, two redshirt freshmen: Jack Martin and Grant Watson, scored for Stanford, evening things at 10-10 with under five minutes to play. Both teams tightened up, knowing another goal might be the decider, but Painter's third exclusion was the straw that broke the camel's back, as Princeton converted with 13 seconds left for the victory.
