NEWTON, Mass. - Stanford sailed to third overall in the Women's ACC Series Round One, finishing just behind Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and ahead of the host, Boston College. The Cardinal sailed strongly over the 28 total races (14 A and 14 B) claiming a top-three spot in 15 of the races.
Stanford took first place in five total events across the two divisions. The Cardinal was at the front of the pack for the entire event, moving into second or first place at multiple times throughout the weekend.
"There was solid decision making in some tricky conditions," explained assistant sailing coach Augie Dale. "Every sailor played an integral role in our success this weekend including all three freshmen who sailed their first events."
In the A division, Stanford finished fifth overall with 71 points. In the B division, Stanford took second overall with 45 points, just behind the eventual champion, Harvard.
Hannah Freeman skippered the A division for the Cardinal and had three different crews throughout the regatta. Ellie Harned joined Freeman for races 1-8, Sophie Fisher sailed in races 9-10, and Abigail Tindall finished off the event, crewing 11-14.
Harned, Fisher, and Tindall combined for the crew duties in the B division as well while Vannessa Lahrkamp took charge as the skipper for the first eight races. Harned and Fisher each took turns skippering in the B division as well.
Stanford will return to action next weekend, competing for the Stu Nelson trophy hosted by Connecticut College and at the ACC Coed Series Round One, hosted by Saint Mary's College of Maryland.
