STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Jasmine Aikey and junior Samantha Williams scored goals as No. 14 Stanford (11-2-1, 4-1-0 Pac-12) earned a 2-1 victory over No. 21 Washington State (8-3-2, 2-2-1 Pac-12) on Sunday from Cagan Stadium.
Aikey broke a scoreless match in the 28th minute when she unleashed a shot on a free kick from a few yards outside the box and bent it to the near post where WSU goalkeeper Nadia Cooper got a glove on it but could not keep it out of the goal.
The goal was Aikey's second of the season – both coming on free kicks.
Washington State, which put four of its six shots in the match on frame, drew even in the 41st minute when Mykiaa Minniss volleyed a ball back across the front of the goal off a free kick where it hit off a Stanford defender and fell into the back of the net for an own goal.
Williams made the most of her one shot in 31 minutes played, running onto a pass from Lumi Kostmayer down the right side of the box, shaking a defender with a cut back to her left foot, and firing a laser past Cooper for the game-winner in the 76th minute.
For Williams, the goal was her fifth of the season. With the assist – her second of the season – Kostmayer now owns a team-high 20 points.
Stanford finished the match with a 22-6 advantage in shots, including putting 10 on frame and forcing Cooper into eight saves. Stanford also took 10 corner kicks compared to four from Washington State.
Junior goalkeeper Ryan Campbell was credited with four saves on the afternoon for the Cardinal.
Graduate student Abby Greubel closed the contest with a match-best seven shots, including putting three on goal. Aikey was just one shot behind Greubel with six.
Stanford will now prepare to host No. 1 UCLA on Friday at 6 p.m. The match will be Stanford's Mental Health Awareness match.
